WEST SIDE STORY - Coming soon!Posted on December 11th, 2012
WEST SIDE STORY IS COMING TO HUNTSVILLE
OPENING JANUARY 4th
AT THE MARK C. SMITH CONCERT HALL
The tour of the smash hit Broadway revival of WEST SIDE STORY is coming to Huntsville, and is presented by Broadway Theatre League and Damson Automotive Group. WEST SIDE STORY will open at the Mark C. Smith Concert Hall at the Von Braun Center on Friday, January 4th for five great performances. Tony Award-winning librettist Arthur Laurents’ Broadway direction is recreated for the tour by David Saint, the Associate Director on Broadway. The original Jerome Robbins choreography is reproduced by Tony Award-nominee Joey McKneely (The Boy from Oz, The Life). WEST SIDE STORY will run from January 4th through 6th and is sponsored by Regions Bank, Stephens Millirons P.C., Lockheed Martin, and WAAY 31.
WEST SIDE STORY tells the story of star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria as they struggle to rise above the hatred and intolerance that surrounds them. WEST SIDE STORY soars as the greatest love story of all time and remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. The Bernstein and Sondheim score is considered one of Broadway’s finest and features such classics of the American musical theatre as “Something’s Coming,” “Tonight,” “America,” “I Feel Pretty” and “Somewhere.”
The Associated Press says WEST SIDE STORY “remains Broadway’s best dance-driven musical. Five decades have not dimmed the extraordinary choreography or the score that pulsates throughout.” Variety says, “The true stars of WEST SIDE STORY are Jerome Robbins’ graceful, endlessly expressive choreography and Leonard Bernstein’s score, which still sounds bracingly modern a half-century after it was first heard. The music is a primal force.”
WEST SIDE STORY is written by three theatrical luminaries: two-time Tony Award winner Arthur Laurents (book) and multiple Tony and Grammy Award winners Leonard Bernstein (music) and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics) in his Broadway debut.
WEST SIDE STORY features scenic designs by James Youmans, costumes by Tony Award nominee David C. Woolard, lighting by Tony Award winner Howell Binkley and sound design by Peter McBoyle.
The performance schedule for WEST SIDE STORY is:
Friday, January 4, 8:00 pm
Saturday, January 5, 2:00 pm & 8:00 pm
Sunday, January 6, 2:00 pm & 7:30 pm

Broadway Theatre League Presents Free Children’s ShowPosted on November 6th, 2012
The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales to entertain and educate 3,500 area students
Huntsville, AL – Broadway Theatre League (BTL) is pleased to present the first of two children’s shows for the 2012 - 13 season, The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales. The show will be presented Friday, November 16 at 9:30 am and 12:30 pm. Based on the book by John Scieszka and Lane Smith and adapted for the stage by William Massolia, The Stinky Cheese Man is performed by the Griffin Theatre Company of Chicago, IL. Through generous donations from BTL patrons and with grant support from the Alabama State Council of the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, BTL is able to present these performances free of charge to area schools, pre-schools and home-school programs.
For over 10 years, BTL has been providing an educational outreach program to area school children, bringing in special daytime performances of shows such as Velveteen Rabbit, Arthur and Peking Acrobats. In the beginning, the school performances were offered at a discount for students, with most costs covered by donations, sponsorships and grants. Now BTL is providing these school performances free of charge and continues to provide educational materials and study guides to accompany each show as well as a personal visit to attending classrooms by a BTL staff member. “We work hard to provide an opportunity for any student to see a show free of charge” said BTL’s executive director, Andrew Willmon.
BTL takes the educational outreach program a step further by offering a fun pizza party and celebration to the group of students who create and submit the best class project based on what they learned while at the show. This is a great way to continue the educational component and allows students an outlet to express their experience and thoughts from the show.
BTL’s mission is to provide students of the Tennessee Valley area a special opportunity to develop an appreciation of, and love for, live theater through these educational experiences. Any student has the opportunity to see The Stinky Cheese Man for free.
About the show:
Jack has a problem. He’s successfully grown an enormous beanstalk, scaled to the top, and stolen a golden harp and gold-laying goose from the sleeping giant. However, the giant has now awoken and Jack has scurried back down the beanstalk in the hopes of chopping it down before the giant can catch him.
As the hungry giant catches up to Jack, Jack is forced to find ways to divert the giant’s attention in order to avoid becoming an afternoon snack. When he is unable to find a suitable hiding place, Jack convinces the giant that a good story or two would be the perfect way to begin a meal.
Reading, Writing, Language Arts, Story Telling. Recommended for ages 4 - 9, Grades Pre-K - 4.
